Desert Riders Morocco with Chris Scott - April 2009

5th - 18th april

Chris Scott

Peter Buitelaar from Bikershome Off-Road Centre in Ouarzazate has joined forces with desert biker and Sahara specialist Chris Scott for a one-off 14-day adventure through the remoter corners of the Moroccan Sahara all the way to the Atlantic and back.

Unlike other Bikershome tours, most nights on this long-distance tour will be spent camping in the wilds to get a real feel for the desert. A daily hot shower is not guaranteed although of course there will always be water for a wash. We'll ride an average of 170km off-road per day.

Chris will be your guide on his ex-Desert Riders Honda XR650L. Peter and a mechanic follow the group on close range for quick support when needed. A second 4x4 follows with the bivouac materials and your personal luggage.

Day 1. On arrival in Ouarzazate the Bikershome crew welcomes you and together we drive to the hotel. After a drink beside the pool it's time to put on your riding gear and take a short test ride with the bikes. Dinner is served at 7pm; after that we have a briefing for the next day.

Day 2. Starting in Ouarzazate we head south over unpaved tracks crossing the Jebel Bani range where we make camp in a hidden canyon under a shaded palmerie.

On Day 3 we enter the Sahara: pure desert air, distant desert ranges, thorny acacia trees, ancient rock carvings and the freedom to ride where we like. Follow Chris and you get the best the desert has to offer. Around lunchtime we stop for a picnic at a suitable spot under the shade of a tree.

Later in the afternoon we reach a totally unexpected waterhole or guelta with palm trees and sand, a perfect place for a bivouac. First a dive into the cool water, then we set up camp and help the crew to prepare a tasty meal. After an evening by the campfire listening to Chris' interminable stories we're more than ready to sleep under a million stars.

After a couple of nights outdoors it's time for the luxury of a hotel. There we'll find all the longed-for comforts: a bed, showers, dinner at a table, a pool and phone connection to inform home that all is going well. The next morning, after a good breakfast we slide back in the saddle in search of the next horizon.

After a week in the desert it’s a thrill to reach the Atlantic coast following a night in a spectacularly situated Kasbah hotel. Here we ride up along Plage Blanche before heading inland to follow trails over the 3000-metre high Jebel Siroua and back to Ouarzazate for a special end-of-tour feast.
